Recap of the March 9 BOE Meeting

1.) Highlighting Alameda Schools – Lincoln Middle School

Background: Staff provided a presentation about Lincoln Middle school.

3.) Memorandum of Understanding between AUSD and Academy of Alameda Middle School (AAMS) Charter School for Special Education Services

Background: This item was pulled from the agenda.

4.) Academy of Alameda Middle School (AAMS) Charter School – Timeline Updates and Recommendations

Background: Staff provided more information on the Newcomer program, school closure of Chipman school, school attendance boundaries, K-6 at Washington school and transportation.

5.) Resolution No, 10-0031 Reduction of Work Year for Certificated Administrators and Unrepresented Employees

Background: The Board of Education has determined that the use of eight (8) furlough days or equivalent salary-related measures for all District certificated administrators and certificated unrepresented employees was needed. The Board approved the resolution.

Fiscal Implications: $176,000 in potential savings.

6.) Resolution No, 10-0032 Recommendation to Reduce or Discontinue Particular Kinds of Services for the 2009/10 School Year

Background: The Board of Education expressed its intent to reduce and/or discontinue particular kinds of services. As a result, notices will be sent to affected employees by March 15th. This is a breakdown of affected categories of employees: Elementary Teachers, 40.20 FTEs, Middle and High School Teachers in the following subjects: PE Teachers, 2.63 FTEs, English 8.50 FTEs, Social Science, 1.33 FTEs, Mathematics, 10.40 FTEs, Humanities, 1.00 FTEs, Life Science, 2.67 FTEs, Physical Science, 2.67 FTEs, CORE English/Language Arts/History, 11.50 FTEs, Spanish, 1.00 FTE,  Art/Music, 2.00 FTEs, Principal, 1.00 FTE, Vice Principal, 1.00 FTE, Counselors 5.40 FTEs, ROP Teachers, 11.40 FTEs for a total of 101.70 FTEs.

Fiscal Implications: Estimated cost savings of a reduction of $6,221,874 based on 91.30 FTEs. The 11.40 FTEs for ROP is directly funded by the JPA and results in cost savings to the District.

7.) Resolution No, 10-0033 Approval of Notice of Reduction in Work Year Due to Lack of Work/Lack of Funds of Classified Management, Confidential and Classified Unrepresented Employees

Background: The Board of Education has determined that the use of eight (8) furlough days or equivalent salary-related measures for all District classified management, confidential and classified unrepresented employees was needed. The Board approved the resolution.

Fiscal Implications: $123,400

8.) Amendment to Superintendent’s Contract to Reduce Work Year

Background: The Board of Education has determined that the use of eight (8) furlough days or equivalent salary-related measures for the Superintendent. Her contract was amended to reduce her work year.

Fiscal Implications: $6,612

9.) Resolution No, 10-0034 to Adopt 2009/10 Second Interim Financial Report and Strategic Budget Recommendations

Background: Staff presented the 2009/10 second interim for approval. The second interim was approved.

10.) Proposed Special Meeting Dates for Parcel Tax Review and Approval

Background: In order to ensure timely approval of a parcel tax resolution for placement on the ballot on June 22, 2010, the Board of Education needs to determine how many special meetings to conduct between March 9 and March 23. Possible dates for special meetings include March 15, March 18 and March 22.

The Board agreed to meet on March 15 starting at 5pm in Closed Session. The regular session will start at 5:30pm. The parcel tax will be an informational/action item. If the Board does not take action on March 15 they will held another special meeting on March 18.
