Alameda School Board Candidate Questionnaire Pt.3

Today’s Board of Education Question:

Incumbents, why do you feel you should be re-elected, what are your top accomplishments of the past four years? Challengers, why do you feel one or both of the incumbents should be replaced?

Patricia “Trish” Spencer:

There are three Board seats open, and two incumbents running for re-election.  Thus, there’s at least one seat available for a new Board member without unseating an incumbent.  However, I believe I’m uniquely qualified to serve as a member of the Board of Education and, especially in these difficult financial times, the most qualified candidate to be an effective Board of Education member.  As a parent (of four AUSD students), educator and committed volunteer throughout Alameda Unified School District, I have experienced in-depth and in-person the critical issues facing AUSD.  My experience, as a substitute teacher in virtually every AUSD school, Alameda PTA Council President, and an attorney, positions me uniquely to bring a fresh perspective to the School Board and makes me most prepared to tackle the quality-of-education, equity and fiscal challenges facing us and represent a broad range of interests.

I would encourage you to review my website www.votetrish.com for more information and updates on my campaign.  I would be honored to have your support.

David Forbes:

Starting with the change in Superintendent, the climate within the District has changed considerably over the last four years. I would submit that there is a great deal more mutual respect between AUSD employees and the Board than there has been in quite some time.

I fought to ensure that students from all three small west end elementary schools (Miller, Woodstock & Longfellow) would have the opportunity to start out at the brand new Ruby Bridges Elementary School. I realized the danger from this year’s Governor’s budget and started the snowball that became the Measure H avalanche. I understand the unfortunately farcical system by which California chooses to fund education – and am working to change it.

As of the morning of Friday 8/29/08, I have been endorsed by the following:

City of Alameda Democratic Club, Bill Schaff, President, AUSD Board of Education, Lena Tam, Vice Mayor, City of Alameda, Sheila Jordan, Superintendent, Alameda County Schools, Ann McCormick President, Public Utilities Board, City of Alameda, AUSD Parent, Wilma Chan, Former Assemblywoman, 16th AD, Anne DeBardeleben – Realtor, Past President – Alameda Education Foundation, Bill Garvine, former AUSD Board Member, Burnham E. Matthews, Alameda Police Chief, retired, John Knox White, Andy Currid, Susan Davis, Sylvia Kahn & Dan Salsbury, George Phillips, Sarah Noble, Ann Casper & Mark Irons, Jon Spangler & Linda Hudson, Chris & Kris Murray, Lauren Do, Jeptha Boone, M.D., Kathy & Kent Rosenblum, Frank Matarrese, Council Member, City of Alameda, Rev. Michael Yoshi, Ed & Peg Kofman

Ron Mooney:

The Board needs to be strong community advocate and visionary for our schools and I believe I can deliver those qualities consistently. With the departure of Bill Schaff’s perspective, both business and educationally, I will offer my views, experience and

passion. I’ve had frank and deep discussions with Bill regarding the wide range of issues facing the Board and he has endorsed me. With my experience and substantial volunteer efforts throughout AUSD I believe I will be immediately effect as your board member.

Neil Tam:

I respect both incumbents.  They were faced with making budget cuts for three consecutive years.  School board members must be cohesive in building concenses. They must develop an overarching goal and ensure that decisions are aligned to this goal. The Northern California Coro Community Leadership Program prepared me in building community relationships and developing effective strategies for solutions.
